“The Midwestern state of Iowa is an unusual place to find a Parisian. But Mélisse has always marched to the beat of her own drum and forged her own path. She’s had to. Born and raised in Paris and after attending the Paris Conservatoire, she could not find a job and had to leave the country. As a university professor, she is one of those special teachers that thinks outside the box; the kind of teacher that changes lives.
While the La Maestra competition requires a lot of preparation for everyone, for Mélisse it presents extra challenges. She has to prepare mentally and emotionally to return to a place where she has experienced many personal traumas. In the weeks leading to the competition, Mélisse is like a prize fighter training for a fight. There is a lot she must overcome if she is going to win. However, the prize she is seeking might not be found inside of a concert hall.” Maestramovie on Instagram
“‘Maestra’ follows five internationally-based women as they prepare for and perform in La Maestra, the only competition in the world for female orchestra conductors. Personal stories of survival, passion and perseverance are woven together with the drama and excitement of this one-of-a-kind event created to break yet another glass ceiling for women.” Maggie Contreras, Director.
